The Weight Management Program
About Obesity
Obesity is one of the top 3 causes of preventable death in the United States according to the National Institutes of Health. Although the causes of obesity were once thought to be lack of willpower or laziness, we now know that this is not the case. Many factors such as genetics and family influence, environment, psychology, society, culture, and lack of physical activity can contribute to an individual becoming obese. In the past, diet and exercise were the prescribed treatment for obesity. Currently, morbid obesity is considered a disease that can cause many other serious health problems. As a result, surgical treatment has gained acceptance as a proven method to treat this disease, yet surgery is not for all individuals with obesity. Eligibility must be determined.
